A Guided Canal Tour
The 7. may 2015, I was on a guided tour in the Copenhagen Harbour and the wizard was no less than the head of it all, the former Mayor and current Director of the Town and Port which is the company responsible for the entire development of the port. Kramer Mikkelsen became mayor in 1989-the year after I moved to Copenhagen and he have if someone had an impact on the rapid developments that have taken place in the port of Copenhagen the last 25 years. It is not all of it is good, but he took over a town of fallitens rim so in the first year he was in own words; overjoyed to have sold some of the land that was for sale in as more and more industry moved away from the port. Unfortunately, it took some time before the Copenhagen municipality had made a proper plan for what they would with the port, so we are now trying to make up for the less fortunate buildings and, above all, learn from it, so the next areas to avoid similar problems. On one of the first areas of the harbour were built fine Office houses, but they left the port completely without humans. In between the architects was used as an example of how not to do it. Today, we have built a promenade “Kalvebod Wave” out in the harbour. In the long term is the idea that the whole area on both sides of the road along the Harbour and prepared traffic on both sides of the Harbour, along with “Bicycle tubing” and the bridge over the port should become a more green and sensuous experience and transform from a forever reviled into an attractive area. Circle The Bridge-Christianshavns Canal. The bridge was inaugurated on 22 September. August 2015, can be opened so the sail ships can still get into the Canal.
The expansion of the port’s going all the way from the South Harbour to North Harbour and on both sides, so it is many kilometers, that constantly changes appearance. Are being built on land and in water. Excavations, not least from metro construction. will be used for refilling, then port over has been a share narrower, with more and more houses located on fulfilled land. There will be built bridges, between the two sides of the harbour Copenhagen and Amager and less-bridges that connects the many channels. As a cyclist, it is fantastic, and a walk along the quayside, on both sides, is always a pleasure. It is interesting to follow developments with all the new buildings and see how different areas on the line from North to South is evolving. It is my absolute favorite trip by bicycle, but a canal tour guided by the one who knows all the stories behind, was an extra spice and an opportunity to view areas that otherwise are not yet available, as a proportion of the area in North port still is free trade area with General access forbidden.
The stretch from Langebro to Knippelsbro and on to Long line past the Little me is the old area of the port known from channel rundfarterne, sailing around slotsholmen and Christianshavn. There is still the old Copenhagen with customs building in Port Street from the days when there was both Sweden and Copenhagen typically construction.
It’s slow, but there are new bridges on the way that will make it much easier and quicker for cyclists and pedestrians to get across the harbour. As a cyclist, it is great to Copenhagen does much to be cyklesternes city. Sailing people are less enthusiastic, now they must wait for the bridges go up before they can proceed, but they are also cyclists, so hopefully they also learn to see the benefits.
Sydhavnens new and rebuilt buildings has happened on old factory and industrial areas, landfill and fill from, inter alia, Underground construction. One tries to maintain recreation areas and allotments, like sailing and roklubber helps to create life in the new areas. We have remodeled old silos into apartments and with inspiration from Amsterdam built a canal city with close settlements separated by channels. That the residents are so close to the water means ogs ¨ that they have a basin just outside the door and a Seabus which can quickly bring it into the city centre.
In North port being built at present a brand new city. On the one hand, in the former free port and partly fulfilled land. Here we also recycles old silos which are transformed into attractive apartments and office buildings. Worthy houses are maintained and included in the new build for a new town near developed town with shops, cafes, apartments and offices. With easy access to water, you can quickly take a ride in a rowboat. The area gets a metro, but otherwise will be a seabus also here is a good alternative to get from the end of the Harbour to the other.
On either side of the Harbour has been an Opera and a new Copenhagen Skuespilshus and p. t work is being done on that neighbouring reasons for these buildings also will be new attractions for the city’s residents and tourists. Next to the skuespilshuset built an underground parkeringanlæg or perhaps rather a undevandsanlæg with an installation at the top where you can enjoy the city. An adventurous Space as it is called, with outdoor seating, with space for outdoor events and theatre forstillinger, and a 65 m wide kyssettrappe down to the water, and there will also be scope for activities on the water. The whole thing is expected to be finished in the summer of 2016. Next to the Opera on Papirøen, was an empty warehouse (opr. for the storage of paper for newspapers pg leaves) temporarily taken over by Copenhagen Street Food and sold from small stalls all sorts battle dishes for primarily outdoor enjoyment. In a few years, when we know what the island to use for and have found the money for funding, it is a very popular Street Food enough to find another space in the city, but until then it is a good meeting place. It is typical for Copenhagen, as soon as a warehouse be vacated so POPs cafe and lounge chairs forward and everything is filled up as soon as the sun shines.
It takes a bit of time yet before all the construction sites are gone, but the port will be definitely a very attractive place to visit, even when it will be finished. On this tour there was primarily the port’s main channels, as well as the new initiatives in North and South we saw, but on various Canal Cruises you can see even more of Copenhagen Harbour’s many facets of both new and old.
